Group urges voters to “restore integrity to the Minneapolis Board of Estimate and Taxation.”
April 1, 2019 – Minneapolis, MN — The Club for Taxpayer Justice and Not Carol has registered as a political committee in Hennepin County, pledging to be a champion for everyday Minneapolis taxpayers and their families. The all-volunteer organization is committed to electing candidates with judgment and integrity to the Board of Estimate and Taxation in 2021. This means candidates who are not the incumbent Carol Becker.
The announcement came first in a series of tweets from committee chair John Edwards as he traveled to Hennepin County Government Center to establish the group as a legal entity, “entitling us to raise mountains of money we will later use to influence the 2021 election for Board of Estimate and Taxation.” The group will adhere strictly to campaign finance laws, which provide for no maximum donation limits.
At every opportunity, board member Carol Becker misleads the public, casts harmful votes, and engages in an up-is-down/black-is-white communication style that’s puzzling to anyone who’s paying attention. The problem: nobody pays attention to the Board of Estimate and Taxation. Today, Minneapolis taxpayers will begin to pay attention.
As the first political campaign or organization to announce for the 2021 city election, The Club for Taxpayer Justice and Not Carol is a grassroots movement that’s well-positioned to end Carol Becker’s chaotic tenure on the BET. The group is also pledging to engage new voters around the important issue of taxation, and the often overlooked topic of estimation.
About Our Committee Chair John Edwards
John Edwards is a former 3rd place finisher and write-in candidate who received 1,539 first place votes for BET in 2017. In addition to skills honed on the campaign trail, John has built relationships with local influencers that will put the #NotCarol2021 campaign over the top. John has always maintained that “This isn’t about me, it’s about the taxpayers.” That’s why he’s volunteering his time between now and November 2, 2021 working to elect candidates with judgment and integrity to the BET.
Last year, John was the victim of Carol Becker’s bizarre attempt to steal the name of his award-winning local news website, “Wedge LIVE!”. Despite this malicious and unlawful attack by Carol Becker, John pledges to run “the most transparent and honorable big money PAC that Minneapolis has ever seen.” The group will post all campaign finance reports to their website and will communicate regularly with the public via Twitter and Facebook.
John wants prospective donors to know that their contributions will be maximized and put to the most efficient possible use. For example, the organization decided to put the word “Club” in their name so they could purchase a super cheap dot club domain (notcarol.club). This means their only expense so far amounts to just $1.55.
The Road to #NotCarol2021
The time between now and 2021 will be spent acquiring a sizable campaign war chest. This means holding fundraisers, hosting house parties and asking influencers to use the hashtag #NotCarol2021. It’s time to talk to your friends about restoring integrity to the BET.
In just four weeks, everyone is invited (but not Carol) to the campaign kickoff:
